VLCC Media Release

4 August 2009

The maintenance of national security is a role of immense importance to the Australian way of life. Any attempt to disrupt the strong social fabric that underpins Australian society is an abhorrent act and is globally condemned.

Four individuals were detained in today’s counter-terrorism raids in Melbourne. These individuals do not exemplify the motivations of any single community group but should be seen as isolated and extremely unfortunate events which are condemned by the entire Australian community collectively. More specifically, any act of terrorism is completely unacceptable to the broader Australian community including the Australian Lebanese community. Any act of terrorism is contrary to all Islamic teachings and beliefs. There is no room for terrorists in our society, irrespective of their ethnic identity.

The Australian community must collectively work towards dispelling criminals and those who aim to shake the foundations of Australian security and ensure that they are brought to justice. Australian national security is vital, and the Australian Lebanese community highly condemn any activities which jeopardise the national security we all enjoy.
